A Poetic Reunion

Love and Memories in Seattle

written by: Andy Cooper

Emery slipped in through the backdoor
timing her return just right.
Emery tiptoed down a windy memory lane
and exchanged a tear with my smile.

We grappled over what used to be
back before she found love in Carolina.
Emery’s been single for a year;
me, a lot longer.

She returned to Seattle,
and she comes every evening.
I should call the cops,
but I like her desperate side.

Emery’s vanilla scent shot me upright.
Emery painted us in her words in a framed picture,
hanging on the beige living room walls.

Our troubles crumbled to dust beneath our feet.
Radical empathy and the prayer that she’d returned
did something inside of me.

I’m sertraline for the naïve.
And she’s my natural high.
