Carry On

Carry On

written by: Deborah Boyer

you were talking about childhood trauma
you can pry a nail from the wall you said
by way of analogy
but you are left with a hole

we spend our days in search of spackle
that will not shrink-in from the edges
with the elasticity to bridge the gap
that we can smooth out, sand down, paint over

a shallow fix for an optical illusion
while the maw behind
consumes us from the inside

I think you meant there to be hope in your analogy
but I lost that piece when I
took it to a darker place
I think you meant I need to love the holes

while I furiously struggle
to fill their gaping depths
with words on pages
