Cobwebs and Cotton

cobwebs and cotton
threads in their essence
draw light on silken strands
highlighting your presence
you sit by my side, smiling
and I am shorn of all pretense
as we interlink fingers
in shades of ivory and incense
fingers that pluck at strings
holding words spoken in defense
and you’re gone: trailing out of my life
like an unfinished sentence.
