Flash Memoir From 1961

written by: Stark Hunter

mother in blue dress stirs the pork and beans
a dim black and white soap opera beams low
from a bulging magnavox next to a naked divan
freckled boy in blue denim watches his mother
he wonders why she wears a dress and stockings
why she dances barefoot to the music of sedaka
father in blue suit and yellow tie enters whistling
he kisses mother and waves to the freckled boy
father lights a dual filter cigarette and wonders
what’s for dessert and if he got any phone calls
bobby rydell replaces sedaka now on boss radio
mother fries bloody meat on the white gas stove
father now whispers something in mother’s ear
freckled boy sitting on naked divan wonders why
mother is putting on high heels and bloody lipstick
why father is taking off his yellow tie and blue coat
freddie cannon replaces rydell now on boss radio
mother tells freckled boy to sit down at the table
father serves bloody meat to mother on a skewer
the phone rings and father says the call is for him
freckled boy sitting quietly wonders who’s calling
wonders what father does all day in his blue suit
mother in blue dress chews the pork and beans
