Frau Perchta

Alps mountains,
gelid, alluring, and surreptitious,
become submerged
in the Oak Moon’s
beige-pallid moonlight.
Their tall, ebony shadows
as unsettling as specters
in a procession, looming over
the snowy landscape
and a village down below.
Pack of gray wolves
running and in sync clamor
their melancholy hymn,
echoing from the dark forest,
up on the Alp mountains
and to the Oak Moon.
Mountain winds whips –
cackling, inauspicious, sanguinary,
and feminine, echoes
with a vivid, ebony silhouette appearing.
Beige-pallid moonlight cast –
revealing Frau Perchta,
the Christmas Witch,
lugubrious, beguiling,
portentous, and impious.
Her white hair,
long and transparent,
like snow, blows –
revealing her pallid face,
graceful, algid, and eerie
with her ebony antlers
shawled in pine and holly berries.
Claret-snowy eyes,
gelid and disquieting,
reveal her irreligious nature
against the lantern’s light.
Ivory dress,
long, elegant, and delicate,
with its bottom smeared
in charred ashes, shawled
in a dark russet-brown fur coat, oscillates –
walking across the mountainside
in sapphire-mauve bare feet,
hymning an ancient Germanic incantation
while the village’s belltower tolls
“Silent Night” and snow falls.
