If Only I Could

If Only I Could

written by: O’Nika M

If only I could tell you
While you were in my belly
How much I love you
If only I could

We haven’t officially met
I just knew from the onset
How special you would be
If only I could

New to Motherhood
Not sure if I could
Be adequate to care for you
Love you, the way moms ought to

Then you arrived
Beautiful and bright-eyed
One look at you, I knew
You were precious

I made mistakes along the way
Never on purpose, learning day by day
You loved me through it all
Even when I stumble and fall

Watching you grow
As years go by
Amazed at the lessons
You have taught me, unknowingly

Such a lovely young lady
I could not ask for more
You taught me how to love
To forgive without keeping score

My imperfections are many
Never resenting me for any
You taught me how to dream
When all I wanted was to scream

I can tell you now
How much you are loved
Adored and cherished
A blessing to which I hold dear
