In Heat

for DL
who ignites my love
destructive
fires
devour
us
invigorating
winds
turn on us
fueling calamity
fanning
the
wrath
my home
is safe
my new love
feels safe
while
sparks
ignite
Michael C. Ford’s
words
float
and
dance
amongst us
at Library Girl
brilliant poetry
nourishing
our collective soul
warmth touches
my shoulder
and he whispers:
“please tell me
you’re not married”
and here I sit
after four
(or is it four hundred?)
delectable dates
and countless
texting-minutes
our words
the kindling
of tantalizing
foreplay
as I
melt
back
into
my
teenage
juices
trembling
body
trembling
heart
and clichés
rule
my
world
I’m giddy
but guilty
for inside
I celebrate
fire
outside
i suffer
for the
horses
galloping
helter-skelter
people
running
for
their lives
losing
everything
my heart
weeps
for them
and my
beloved
California
I dwell
within this
paradox
as new
love
gently
caresses
and lifts
me from
grief’s ashes
and I soar
above the
embers
embracing
wonder
and the
lightness
of hope
Alison Vail Fuller
The blank page beckons. It can provide the key to truth, to inspiration, to enlightenment, and to justice. At a time when fundamental democratic institutions are under assault, arts and letters can give testimony to the unprivileged, the underserved, and the forgotten.
I write because it is life sustaining, and I hope that my words reflect, even in a small way, the indomitability of the human spirit.
A Connecticut girl transplanted to New York City’s East Village, I later found my way to Venice, California. I was quickly won over by its tableau of diversity, art, and the breathtaking views that always promise better days—for our daughters, our sons, and all mankind.
