Maryanne’s Autumn Lover

Maryanne’s Autumn Lover

As I skimmed a newspaper
in September, I felt a wanton
gaze peel off my autumn layers.
I lifted my head slowly.
Maryanne shot me an alluring look
of a virgin, lowering her guard
and wanting her first to be, well, me.
Maryanne searched my soul before
I even engaged her attention.
I observed her speak with friends,
but nothing lit her face
like my name on her lips.
And her heart quickened
as love met our line of sight.
We saw eye-to-eye on what it took
to be more than what we’d settled
for before this chance encounter
at a cafe turned our lousy luck upside down.
God answered our prayers over coffee
with a radio playing a song about redemption.
