My Folks

My Folks

written by: Mike Ricketts

My folks they came from Jamaica
Many years ago,
They thought the streets were paved with
Gold
Instead, they just found snow.

It wasn’t very easy then

back in ’52

The plan was to make some money

and send “home” a pound or two

It was hard enough to get a job
my mum just turned 18
My dad and mum had not yet met
but they honoured and praised the Queen.

It wasn’t just the Windrush
that brought us to these shores
Other ships and planes and things
to work within these laws.

I have to say many like them
Have really done us proud.
A humble yet integrity strong
Moral values stand out in a crowd.

As time has gone nearly over fifty years
they’ve been through stormy weather
but despite that lot and through their vows
they hung in there and stayed together.

Now truth be told and I’m not that bold
but there is something I have learned
you cannot expect to get respect
until respect is earned.

Now when I see my brethren dem
a stab and shoot, bring sorrow.
It often makes me wonder what
will bring us here tomorrow.

Now whether you are a Muslim or Jew
Christian or someone of no belief,
You cannot deny that some people are lost
and need some kind of moral relief.

In my quest for moral values,
to stop these trips to the morgue
I have found a great nonreligious website
thewaytohappiness org

The title may sound corny
or is that possibly true
I decided to check it out
it worked for me now possibly you.

Our youth are caught in a maelstrom
some more may even die
but for the sake of humanity
some of us should give it a try.
