Not Just Another Resolution

Not Just Another Resolution

I don’t normally make resolutions,
everyone knows they never stick,
but I vow to make this one different,
I pledge to work through thin and thick

You see,
I read a line in a self-help book
that really resonated with me,
the author proposed a brilliant idea
in a workbook I downloaded for free

She wrote,
each time that you berate yourself,
a habit women frequently do,
you must turn that insult on its head
by saying something positive too

So,
if I declare this poem is no good,
if I say it’s not my best,
I must turn that insult on its head,
put my resolution to the test

I’ll say,
I was brave to write this poem,
to publish for all to see,
I’m risking people’s judgement,
look how courageous I can be

I think I like this way of thinking,
I think it’s making me grow stronger,
with hard work and ample practice
I’ll soon berate myself no longer
