Being a Dad

Playing games you don’t want to play
Being a horse and a climbing frame
Acting the fool and making them laugh
Telling them off when they’ve gone too far
Explaining monsters don’t exist
Explaining empathy and right from wrong
Explaining impossible homework problems
Explaining the meaning of the universe
Building the new and fixing the broken
Eating the food they couldn’t manage
Giving a new bar of soap whilst you use the slither
And a new tube of toothpaste whilst you work the last squeezes
Holding their hand when they cross the road
Rubbing their back when they’re feeling poorly
Reassuring them when they’re feeling anxious
Listening when they feel down
Telling them it’ll be ok even though it might not
Being a brave face in a frightening situation
Holding them close when they need love
Explaining clouds and silver linings
Stepping in whenever needed
Stepping back when asked for space
Telling them they are your world
Letting them go when the day has come
