Passing On

Not shifting from grade eight to nine.
More like ninety miles an hour,
down a dead end street
overtaking the undertaker.

“cramming for the finals” as you shuffle
your given spot on the pew.
Asking forgiveness from all non-Christians,
turned to this page.

Norse called it crossing the Rainbow Bridge,
call it whatever you want.
Most of us can’t call it anything.
“let’s no go upsetting the kids”- eh!

nary a synonym does it justice
ask a funeral director,
ask the sailor steering the barge,
not soldier or candle stick maker.

But, we do ask ourselves
as we should
as we voyage on
as we set in harbour
as we set on our sails.
take on crew
take on baggage
take on life
take on our own passage.
