Rethymnon

Rethymnon

written by: Deirdre Carney

Sweet as my own youth is hers to me
On this sunny Autumn island.
Ease of limb in the sunsetting sea,
Soft laugh of surprise as raki burns,
Sigh of delight on waking in a new land,
Smiling at fierce sunlight on the harbour’s water:
“That’s my favourite sight in nature, Mum.”
Shining eyes as she turns the world
In her hand, contemplating with rapture
Each fresh thing,
Renewing the world for me, who felt old.
