River and Sea

River and Sea

written by: Bob McDowell

The sea said: “I nourish the whole world with my even, regular tides
and bare my soul to sun and moon, nothing hides.

What value are you, river?”

The river said: “I reach many people around the world where they are,
in hills and valleys, exposed and hidden.”

My water is for drinking, my sources run deep, my heart smitten.

The sun and moon often don’t gaze upon me,
but I find my way and also reach the sea.

We both provide in different ways to care for all who tend and say:
‘Water is salve and mends hearts and days.’

You, sea, also have bays of stillness
as I, river, can rest in ponds.

There is value to both, open and closed.

Salt tides and swollen streams,
stability and unknown, immense and unseen.”
