Snapshot of Innocence

Snapshot of Innocence

written by: Margaret Karim

University students
Late adolescence
Intellect, bodies
Bathed in innocence
We sit cross-legged
Soft, warm sand
Debating timeworn issues
Beer bottles in hand
Justice for all
Ardent desire
Hearts, souls alight
Youth’s passion afire
Our voices
Cry empathy,
Compassion,
Universal equality
Believe ourselves
Awash in humanity
Unique generation
Masters of destiny
Capable of maintaining
Fundamental convictions
Disallowing tainting
By adulthood’s intervention
Uncomprehending
Ageing’s reality
Personal obligations overriding
Dreams for wider society
Glorious, blessed naivety
Image caught on camera
Fleeting, never forgotten,
Stored in mind’s amphora
