The Birds That Don’t Sing
written by: Daniel Brooks
I fear incarceration
Like the living fear
Death
I fear the point of
No return
I fear that nothing about
Me matters
I fear incarceration like
Like children fear
Monsters
I fear being confined
To slabs of concrete
& metal bars
I fear the deprivation
The violence the
Inhumanity
I fear for my freedom
I fear that they’ll pry
It from my clammy
Hands
I am afraid
I am terrified
Of those
Walls
