The Candle of Love

The Candle of Love

written by: Pramod Rastogi

Once lighted, the candle of love
Is forever alight in a lover’s heart.
In its flickering flame lie the dawn
And the twilight days of his love.
No metaphor can fly higher
Than love itself.

Pristine is the glow of love in odes.
This glow is what gives love its shine.
Wrapped in a mystery in this glitter
Resides the beauty of the universe.
This mystery is what gives passion
Its fuel to keep it blazing.

Love is like a bottle of champagne
That never empties out its contents.
The more ardently you drink it,
The more you cannot live without it.
The lover lives in a cloud of haziness
Until lucidity unveils him on his deathbed.

A candle burns on, grieving the loss,
And lamenting heartbeats burn on, too.
The path of love is lit in loneliness –
A path on which lie many heartaches.
Yet, the wax of compassion soon flows in
And fuels the glittering flame.

Love cannot deny fuel to its flame.
It can burn in summer with its simmer,
And can burn in autumn with its solitude.
It can burn in winter with its shivers
And can burn in spring with a new buzz,
But blown out it will never be.
