What Becomes Of Us
written by: TM Arko
We were the ones
Who would have loved
To change the world
But we didn’t know what to do
Now our children
Hide in the shadows
Blinded by handheld devices
Of gloom
We said
Love is all you need
Now we slit someone’s throat
Stab them in the back
All just to succeed
We sang
Give peace a chance
Imagined a better world
The brother-hood of man is gone
Still we have the need for greed and hunger
We were the ones
Seeking a newer world
Dreaming things that never were
Never asking
Why not
Our somnambulist society
Can’t tell whether
It is dark outside or light
Communism was bad
Then it was good
Now it is just a political game
Stealing from the rich
Giving to the poor
Who give it back
To the rich once more
We said
God is love
Now it is all just religion
Of separation
Hate
And violence
Still saying our grace
Before supper
We wanted togetherness
Now all we see is bitterness
The music of discord
Piped in the streets
The chasm grows wider
On the road to destruction
We never got the chance
To become a revolution
Of true love
Genuine democracy
Pulling down
Heartless idolatry
Was there any worth
In the tears we shed
For the unwanted war
And the abandoned dead
Was there meaning
In who we were
Or is it only
Now that matters
Was there a purpose
For valor in the past
Empty bodies covered
In the ageless dust
Of time
What is there that will outlast
Eternity
If it is not
