The Places Which Are Mine

i am a wild bird
will fight
talon and beak
with authority
against any who seek to
destroy me and my dreams,
and i want not your cages
nor your strings;
i care not for your pedestals
nor your praise
because i have never been one
for empty words—
everything you tell me i can’t do
i will
out of spite and need
to prove to myself and to you
i am stronger than we know,
and you cannot tell me how to live my life
our paths are different;
you are you and i am me and never
will we be the same—
you can try to help,
but forgive me if i do not follow your guiding hand
i mean to get to the places meant for me and me alone.
