Conflicted

Conflicted

written by: Linda M. Crate

it’s Mother’s Day,
and i tell my mother and my
grandmother and my friend’s
that are mothers to have
a good day;

but i feel a little
conflicted—

the closest i came to
motherhood was
a miscarriage,

so sometimes this day
makes me a little sad;

to the child that
never got to be,
and the mother i never
became—

maybe it’s a dream
that will come true
in this lifetime;

but as i get older it seems
less likely it will ever come true.
