Deforestation
written by: Adithya Patil
There are no trees in this poem.
No plants, no saplings. Nothing
that suggests botany, thrives here.
Not even grass because it is green.
There are no trees in this poem.
It is set in the future, but obviously
Like all poems do, it plays out
in the present, it boasts of now.
There are no trees in this poem.
Fathers say to Mothers say to children
say to Friends say to Friends: An oak
is just two vowels and a consonant.
There are no trees in this poem.
It traps the birds in words.
Choking the tender neck of a koel,
forcing it until it starts to sing:
There are no trees in this poem.
