Bedtime Stories
written by: David Wagoner
I never told you bedtime stories,
where the princess waits powerless in a bag on
the way to a bower glowing in glories
for prince to save her from the fearsome dragon.
In the tales I wove for you, child with eyes of blue,
the princess outwitted the cleaver dragon,
and you saved the bumbling knight, too.
Escaped on horses, not white, but from a farmer’s wagon.
In life, it is best to avoid a man with a crown.
Do not sit back and wait to be saved like a zero.
Make your own circle of friends, like a hometown.
Be your own hero!
