DRIFTING

DRIFTING

There’s a shadow on my bedroom wall
Looks just like an island
Some distant place we used to go
A memory in black and grey
There’s a whisper on the water
A soft caress of ocean waves
Some promise in a bottle tossed
Sinking in a salty grave
A cloud on the horizon threatening
Something I can’t truly place
Searching for a point of view
Sorrow that I can’t erase
Some matter left unspoken
A word you cannot bear to hear
A thing you thought was dead and gone
A truth that you can never share
I cannot see the future now
Any more than I can stand my past
Nothing left that interests me
Nothing here that’s meant to last
Now water fills the empty spaces
Seeks its level on its own
Oceans set the time and tides
Drifting on the sea alone
