Midnight

let us speak, you and I
you,
above me
nightcap
upon your
head
poking out
from under
the window
ajar
eyes shining on
a moonless night
I, across
with my lantern
and winter coat
arm aloft
speaking
as I stamp
my feet
to keep warm
the sound
drowning out
the steady
gait of
the horses
pulling a coal
wagon
down the street
