Timeless
written by: Joan McNerney
They announced it over radio and
there was a bulletin on television.
We must turn our clocks back.
An essential duty for all good citizens.
So many were talking about this
“standard time”. I listened carefully.
Everyone exclaimed we would be
rewarded by an extra hour to our day.
I could hardly sleep with all that
excitement. Wow an extra hour!
What wonderment. ..how much poetry
I could collect and how many fancy adverbs!
The next day weariness besieged me.
That noon I felt heavy of heart.
Did I lose an hour? Taking out my calculator,
it became clear two hours were missing.
Where did they go? Did somebody steal them?
Please return my time immediately or else!
