Tool Boxes

At twelve, we hand our boys
Tool boxes
With hammers and wrenches and saws.
Go. Do. Create
Something new in this world.
It’s not good enough.
Make it a better place.
At twelve, we hand our girls
Tool boxes
Of eye shadow and lipstick and blush
Go. Do. Create
Something new for this world.
You’re not good enough
Change your face.

Best day ever? Finding a comfortable boulder near a forest stream where she can write to her heart’s content. Of course, there would also be a hammock nearby, maybe a canoe... and Diet Pepsi. Must have Diet Pepsi.
