Winterbloom

Winterbloom

written by: Jerome Berglund and Isabella Mori

witch hazel a broom for the snow
slick on the cement invisible frost
waiting for grass to poke through can’t smell yet the scent of spring rain
barbecue sauce rolling up sleeves
a beam of light dreaming of summer vacation
in the shade chlorophyll draining

noticing the fog not immediately
cloud cover i still need my toque
somersaulting circular don’t have a pen for her
february round out the numbers
hands at ten and two broke capillaries
too early too early impatient for the buds to burst
dark of moon layering the cake
a lamb is born Brigid’s fire burns through the night
low beams stir soup gnarled branches
the only green moss in the cherry tree
event horizon desert flowers
parka and mittens a dusting on the sand

sun through the clouds a melting not only of my heart
delicate tissue keeping ice off keikis
not dark yet at 5 the daffodil buds are turning yellow
someone insured would visit a hospital
palliative visit will she last until the tulips
smoking before impressionable
risk taker the year is still young
blind collision chipping canine
groundhog a dog barks at her shadow
mound of kernels that didn’t pop
graveside the heat-burned bush that won’t bloom this year
blame the bouncer if we’re not dancing

perseid cluster flies the final episodes
glitterati the stars of mardi gras
catching bouquet at a funeral
sleet-streaked window a little girl asks “where did he go?”
fireworks out of season in the city
sunset down the block witch hazel
