Bouleversant

First Date

written by: Gerry Stefanson

innocent he looked
I knew better
freshly naïve he seemed
this our first encounter
one on one
we exchanged options
opinions and procedures
past events, possible events
chatter gave way to weightier possibilities

guesstimating if all holds together
I may survive 12- 20 more spins.
around the sun
then if mind is clear/flesh is not
I’d be tempted to board an iceberg
and float into the great beyond

if of weaker resolve (dementicated say)
my always loving wife
could launch that berg

now he is not aware, to my knowledge
of the suicide by our fifteen year old son
so many years past

I’m not comfortable with secrets
but my new G.P. looked so innocent,
we’ll breach that conversation, next visit

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Survivors of suicide, at times, need a little wiggle room.
