Oasis

Oasis

sometimes when you fly over a desert
strange things happen with light in your mind’s eye
far below
a seabed of cloud covers a great expanse of land
a swollen slow-flowing canvas cut through with uncharted streaks of orange
and I am at a loss
to understand these shimmering and molten amber pools
knife cuts scattered like burning dust storms
over the just-dead heat of the earth
in places
where there is no one
in places
where there is no water to reflect what is around you
in places
where there is only a bruised darkness
sometimes over a desert
strange things happen with light in your mind
