Black Hawk Massacre

Black Hawk Massacre

(Final Day at Bad Axe)

written by: Kenneth Vincent Walker

Now vastly out numbered,
Pinned in by the Great River;
Fleeing warriors turn raising

A white flag of surrender as
They’re systematically gunned
Down, mostly women, children

And the elderly left. Bodies of
The fallen mounting, scattered,
Upon the bloody ground; While

Women drown crying babies
To keep them from not making
A sound as they hide within

The bullrushes as death looms
Like a dark cloud. An infant is
Noticed floating on a hastily

Woven raft of bullrushes and
Weeds much like Moses only
This time a cavalryman uses

The babe for target practice.
