Going, Going Insane. Gone!

A careful scrutiny of your brain
May indicate you are insane
But since madness is contagious
Your behaviour is not obviously outrageous.
Paying for food from the local shop
With rubber bands, watching the shop assistant’s mouth drop
And sink onto her weary chest
Like an unwelcome guest,
Who, after perusing papers on modern economics
Trigonometry and bionics
She realises with a start
That rather than a science finance is an art
That relies on deception to make it function,

She realises after heavy reading the assumption
That truth is true and lies false
(thinking in all is simply a biological impulse)
A demagogic understanding
That money like rubber bands can keep expanding
Cannot like life decrease
Its palatial ardours equally cease.
But I digress, as my professor said,
As a lunatic, he communed with his wife long dead,
About the size and quietude of the moon
As he supped soup before us with a carbuncle for a spoon,
And began to, standing on his head,
Lecture about an exceptional book he had read
On Thucydides and God
Mistaking the Greek historian for the latter
Impressed by the historian’s civilised patter.
A bus heading for town is driven by itself
While inside passengers admire its stealth
Hiding its true biological birth
By expanding and tightening its girth
According to the numbers it absorbs, taking the corners with ease
In between each explosive sneeze.
Madness is just another reality
And life an illusion like afternoon tea
Spent in a café in the middle of a sea.
The sky isn’t blue, its green. Deserts are dust,
You and I are beginning to rust
As the dream dissolves in the sun’s non-existent light
As day becomes night
And the true lunatic, laughs at our credulity,
Slapping his enormous knee
With an even larger cloud,
Watches us with incredulity and laughs out loud.
