Heartless Cow

Heartless Cow

written by: Wendy Markel

I like to imagine I view you dead,
your body, cold, on a slab of stainless steel.

I like to imagine the tears
I will shed, as I view you dead,
your body, cold, on a slab of stainless steel.

I like to imagine the pain and the dread
that will run through my head,
when I find I’m alone, with no comfort or hope
as I view you dead,
Your body, cold, on a slab of stainless steel.

I like to imagine the hair I will tear
from my head,
and the blood that will flow,
and the trauma of pins I will stab in my eyes
as I view you dead,
your body, cold, on a slab of stainless steel.

I like to imagine the day they will come
with the news that you’re gone,
and the wails and the screams
that will furnish my dreams,
and the tearing apart of my panicking heart,
as I view you dead,
Your body, cold, on a slab of stainless steel.

I like to imagine I view you dead,
and feel the pain, again and again,
so my tears are wrung and emotion is gone,
before the time comes to stand by your coffin
and smile at strangers, and thank the bearers,
and look so calm, that no one will guess
I’ll join you before the day takes its rest.

And no one will listen
to the words that I say,
they’ll just look at my face
and whisper away,

“she’s not shed a tear,
heartless cow.”
