Laughter Is The Best Medicine
written by: Matthew Sweatt
Pain that’s lucid and loose tongued
Especially when we suffer
Tormented by love and those who might
Return our love but not anymore
Peeling back your layers would be
For naught
Because the layer that has your love
Waiting would leave you bleeding
I don’t know if that could be cauterized
and I’m not willing to do what needs to be done
To use the sharp edge that’s necessary
To flay open that part of you
The innocence that is just waiting
Just under that last layer
The one that could end you
The way you are but what you are now
Is a cracked mirror image of what you were
Did I do this, did I break the mirror that
Held your love and innocence so close
Brightly shining in the reflection of
The sun as it dances on water and reflects
When I first and truly looked into your eyes
You looked back into mine through all the Pain
Through all the turmoil, the angst, the hurt
None of it mattered
NOTHING MATTERED AT THAT MOMENT
Though all of this was surely with us
We were laughing just you and I
Laughing at the cruelty that life holds
For one fleeting moment our eyes met
We laughed and laughed
A divine comedy that would be our future
For now uninterrupted laughter and joy
Was ours alone and we would not be
Forsaken
I would tear every ugly sadistic layer
From you
I would put the pieces of your broken
Mirror back together by force of love
I would stand with you in front of your
Mirror and while we stared at each other
While we bled, while we screamed writhed
We could laugh
One more time
Just laugh at horror that life has wrought
Laugh at the pain, laugh at the sadness
Laugh at our screams
Laugh at the ugly truth that is our life
Together
To suffer is to laugh
We have suffered so much
So with the end near look into my eyes
One more time
Like you did so very very long ago
And laugh for me
And I’ll cry for you
