Never-ending Story

Never-ending Story

written by: Paula Puolakka

On Halloween 2024, I was listening to
Alice Cooper’s “Teenage Frankenstein”
when I decided to go for a walk.

The tiny trick-or-treaters ran past me to the doors
of the highly decorated houses.
I turned to the side road
– to get away from the commotion –
when I bumped against the tense body of a tall man.

I ripped my headphones off,
and I looked up to see
the face of the tall dark stranger.
I couldn’t see it, but I knew
that the man behind the hockey mask
was Jason Voorhees:
the scent of the sweet electrified water gave him away.

“Jason, it’s mommy,” I shouted out sweetly: “Give mommy a hug!”
I opened my arms,
not knowing what he would do,
but to my great surprise, he pushed his torso against my body,
and I captured him in a deep embrace.

“That’s my boy,” I said and felt
that everything was alright:
“Come on, baby,
let’s go trick-or-treating.
I have a list of bad people
who ought to be taught a lesson.”

Together we went back to the main street
and began our never-ending story.
