Pantoum For A Family Of Devils

Pantoum For A Family Of Devils

written by: Lou Storey

The Eames family fled Boxford Massachusetts in 1693
Rebecca Eames was tried and found guilty of being a witch
The devil appeared as a colt, together they baptized her only son a wizard
I was a baby, an only son, my mother Jane Eames, died and buried the family secrets

Rebecca Eames was tried and found guilty of being a witch
Fear of women by men in power always results in violence
An only son, my mother died and buried the family secrets
Is love what we all want? Is it meaning? Or is it power?

Fear of women by men in power always results in violence
Grandma’s father, a Christian preacher, taught her love was fear
Is love what we all want? Is it meaning? Or is it power?
Each day the sun spans the same starless sky

Grandma’s father, a Christian preacher, taught her love was fear
Generations kept within strict rules of faith
Each Day the sun would span the same starless sky,
Bravery took a backseat in our DNA

Generations kept within strict rules of faith
Secrets, backroom dalliances and failures of the heart
Bravery took a backseat in our DNA
The only magic we knew came from dark mirrors

Secrets, backroom dalliances and failures of the heart
The devil appeared as a colt, she gave her only son to him.
As the sun made its way across the same starless sky
The Eames family fled New England, 1693.
