Sometimes, It Isn’t Much

Don’t hug me and tell me it’s alright-
he’s still gone:
our last words to each other
his whispered goodbye
because the cancer clipped his voice,
and my farewell spoken softly
as someone trying to stay calm
during a crash landing.
Don’t hug me and tell me it’s alright-
all that does
is remind me how words are
like a Rorschach test,
where I see butterflies
without knowing if that’s the right answer,
but telling myself it must be.
