Stories Keep Us Human

written by: Don Knowles

Stories are what keep us human
Stacking tales of men and women
Like clay slabs to build a vessel
Blending language
Testing truths in opinions fired kiln
Legendary heroes fall to folly
Vile Villains rise to victory
Within a fantasy none can perceive
Yet the wheel keeps on turning
Transforming dirt into such a fine vase
Tapering its walls
Dip in a final glaze
Back to the furious furnace of perception
Then once the once upon a time has tempered
Pass it down to those who'll listen
Will the words to those who'll read them
Our twisted tiles of reality
That makes up all humanity
From mud to pyres
Our stories give our breath a voice

My writing is typically written while I'm on a treadmill, so I call myself "the treadmill poet!"

Born in West Chester Pa in 1960 I have been inspired to begin writing again through my interactions with two people I care deeply about that are experiencing the torrents of mental illness.
