The Image of A Sad Mind

The Image of a Sad Mind

I know the image of a sad mind
that a broken life gives,
I know:
it is what I saw on the face of a widow,
walking across the streets
begging, beset with gloom,
thinking of her youngsters, haggard and famished;
yet life has nothing but these:
act, and wait.

I’ve seen the image of a sad mind,
that grief and tragedy bring along,
I’ve seen:
it is what appears on an urchin’s weary looks
after a heavy downpour, nothing to cover,
scaldingly frigid and crushing down with emotions
on the wet lawn, thinking all is gone;
yet life has nothing but these:
act, and wait.

I’ve felt the image of a sad mind,
that one gains after trudging through misery,
I’ve felt:
it is like the dreadful black of a night
with strange figures lurking in it;
it is like a child born in autumn
and raised without a blanket in winter;
yet life has nothing but these:
act, and wait for better days.
