Whale Song

This morning, like most,
begins with a swim.
The tropical sea is warm in
December and I feel safe, hugged.
I let the Tide push me in towards
shore and then pull me out to sea,
back and forth in a familiar rhythm.
Close to shore I hear the first clicks
and whistles of whale song.
WHALES! I hear myself shout.
I hold my breath to dive beneath the surf.
My chest thrums with their sounds of play,
and Eros I am not alone.
Surprised by their early arrival, their
songs make me shiver with giddiness.
I struggle to shore against a strengthening
tide, then merrily jog home to my Allan.
Allan, Allan, you will never guess.
He yawns, Whales?
He is unmoved by my joy.
He says, you know they come every year.
He doesn’t understand or really care
why they come. I explain again
its babies! They come to have their babies!
I squeal with glee.
He wants waffles.
