Ode To Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn, New York is the place of my birth and the home where my heart will forever remain.

Brought up and taught both at home and at school, from Bushwick to Siegel, Evergreen, Cypress Hills.

Though many the years, no matter how far, I will always return as my memories lie here.

The smells, sights and sounds remind me today of all that I miss when I am away.

On lovely tree lined streets with dark grey slate sidewalks, from dawn until dusk, oh the games we would play.

Skelzie and yoyos, red and blue tops, stoop ball and stick ball, freeze and hopscotch.

We would ride bikes and skate round the block all the day ending with Double Dutch, always the fav.

Oh! Brooklyn, my Brooklyn, a child’s delight.

You will always be fairer in spirit and sight for wonderland greater, never was such.

A place to spin dreams for the rich and the poor, the accomplished speak volumes at home and abroad.Your beauty and charm are alive in your folks who bring life to your neighborhoods, houses and parks. The renewal of Brooklyn is restoring it’s past, giving way to a future it will always outlast. In all of my wanderings and throughout all the years I will never forget you, for my heart remains here.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

I remember my childhood and teenage years with great fondness. Brooklyn was truly a magical place to grow up in.

Lou Storey

A textbook example of nominative determinism, Lou Storey has always been a storyteller, a fact well illustrated in his art and in his writing. His careers have reflected that as well, first as a creator of idea-based exhibitions for museums, and later as a psychotherapist employing narrative therapies. His art and his writing share qualities of rich texture and detail, examining our capacity to be absurd while allowing a measure of forgiveness for our foibles. Storey and his husband Steve retired in 2021 and moved from New Jersey to Savannah Georgia. “We love everything about Savannah, it is like a city that looks like a park and thinks it’s a small town. Best of all, we can grow bananas in the backyard!”

Treats Only, Please! by Lauren Scott

Creepy cackles from tall, looming trees
startle their jumpy heartbeats as they walk.
Shadows discreetly follow the echoes
while they timidly proceed down the block.

Young voices repeat with conviction,
“It’s just a night for entertainment.”
There’s no need for goosebumps and fear
as their eyes focus on the cracked pavement.

Undeniably sensing they’re not alone,
many follow in their hesitant footsteps,
eager to reach doors and push doorbells
but afraid of frightening special effects....
