Felt Like A Monster

felt like a monster

i’m sorry i hurt you
never meant to make you cry,
and i understand
there were good times
amid the bad—
but i have always remembered
insults more than compliments
pain demands to be felt
sometimes
that is the only explanation
i can give,
but it is never my intention
to wound you;
i love you
more than there are galaxies in any given universe
or stars in any given sky—
when i saw your tears
i felt like a monster,
but this pain has nothing to do with you
and everything to do with me
trying to heal myself because healing isn’t
always easy
sometimes the past is hard to let go;
and we all have the lens
of our own perceptions coloring everything.
