Alone

sometimes i think about
all the poets
who came before me
who were popular
because they knew a friend
of a friend
whose head was blown off
who killed themselves.

oh, what a great victory
to overcome life
as we know it.

sometimes, I think about
all the books
that filled my emptiness
and I want to hug them
for their comfort.

I want to hug a solid hard
book
more than a man
they break me into pieces
and never leave me be
alone with my book
they think it’s a competition
but they don’t know
that my one true love
is death
not poetry.
