Anything But

I want to be anything but—
a senseless predicate in your sentence,
useless square root of three,
setting sun on the horizon,
a sting-less honeybee.

I want to be anything but—
a wink in your seasons,
pass time to your day,
voiceless shout in the mountains,
a price you won’t pay.

I want to be anything but—
a missing key to your notes,
a formula you can’t solve,
a joke you can’t make,
a flight you won’t take.

I want to be anything but—
a phone call you wish to ignore,
a blind optimism to blame,
a love you give then take,
a ball you play in your game.

I want to be anything but—
naive and ignorant of your ploy,
a plan you want to destroy,
a song you won’t sing;
I deserve more don’t you think?

I want to be anything and everything,
I’m tired of the buts.
I want to be anything and everything—
with you, buts were all I ever had.
