  1. Where do you originate from?

New York City. Specifically, Queens. I wish I lived closer to Manhattan, but if I did, it would probably cost more. I’ve learned to make the best of it, and in recent years, I’ve appreciated Queens more. My novella manuscripts take place there.

  1. What do you cherish most about the place you call home?

The ease with which I can go places without a car, and not just within the five boroughs. I used to live elsewhere once and rode a bicycle to get around. I liked it, but public transit is no longer something I take for granted.

  1. What ignites your creativity?

Experience: people I’ve met, places I’ve been, things I’ve done. It’s not always a starting point, but when it is, it helps get the ball rolling. Sometimes, for fun, I’ll put friends in my stories—rarely more than a name and a physical description.

  1. Do you have a favorite word, and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?

I dunno. Zaftig?

As in “the slender bridesmaids and the zaftig bride.

Is that poetic?

  1. What is your pet peeve?

If you mean within writing, I suppose it would be coming up with titles for my stories. I’ve always struggled with that, though the more I write short fiction, the easier it’s become, however slowly. Sometimes I wish they weren’t needed. I do the best I can with them.

  1. How would you describe the essence of Rich Watson?

Keeping my head over water. Making a wave when I can.
