Sunday Night in 1962

mother stands by the stove and fries meat
she wears a pale house dress from bullocks
on boss radio joanie sings johnny get angry
her husband arrives from work in a rambler
a pall mall cigarette dangling from tired lips
he is softly whistling the girl from ipanema
young son sits daydreaming about candy
ensconced on a smooth naugahyde sofa
he sees dim visions of after-dinner rituals
the nude bath the pressing of stiff regalia
the invocation of prayers said to a statue
father kisses mother with caressing hand
wonders what’s cooking on the hot stove
young son sits wishing for an earthquake
