Taking Down The Christmas Tree

Taking Down The Christmas Tree

written by: Linda Marie Hilton

In mine eyes the prettiest sight
Is a tree all lit up at night
Sprinkled with small bulbs aglow
To reflect off winter’s snow
So come mid December
Let us bring inside
The potted evergreen patio plant
Let us set this on a table round
With Queen Anne legs so gracefully grand
Light and tinsel, topped by a star
Crocheted snowflakes, candy canes, hung well
Glass bulbs painted in sparkling hues.
Round beneath the table top
Covered with a lovely lace cloth
Heap the presents gaily wrapped, beribboned, and labeled
Opened Christmas Eve amidst squeals of glee.
Then let the presents linger finding homes
One each day, until the Magi come
The Christ child to adore.
Anon down comes the star and tinsel bright,
Ornaments to boxes, light strips wrapped up tight
Then to the patio to snow collect
Until it reaches six feet tall.
Then will we plant it, adding to the rows
Of Christmas trees planted in a graceful arc
Our byway thusly marked:
Outliving generations of humans as if to say
“The year may be dead and a new one born
But time is the same and marches on:
We recycle carbon from the air
Leaving plain oxygen right where
Humans can breathe it in.”
