Garrulous Gambit

written by: Charles A. Perrone

Several pawns inched forward toward a hoped promotion
yet only one was able en passant to capture a like subject
as the right rook and kooky King consulted and castled
then in subsequent motions approached and hassled
numerous unfortunate unevenly placed odd opponents
while wholly bishops diagonally sliced and diced ahead
and mounted knights leaped over inordinate obstacles
in support of an ascendant and widely admired Queen
whose equally regal counterpart descended into fright
for her own royal spouse was going to have to endure
not the expected and earned word known as checkmate
but the direct apostrophe: “Check your surroundings,
mate. It’s board conquered and therefore game over.”
