Just “One Word” Away (“Hell”)

written by: Phyllis P. Colucci

One word becomes one idea, becomes one sentence, becomes one poem, becomes one story. It must start from just “one word”. Today my one word is “Hell”.

What is hell? Is it a person, is it a place or is it a thing? Is it all three happening at the same time, or is it possibly just your state of mind? Hell can be the most evil, hateful and vicious PERSON you can ever encounter; hell can be that PLACE where you will burn for eternity, as promised by your religious upbringing if you are “bad”; or hell can just be that THING that hovers over you like a dark cloud, on a daily basis, to simply remind you of the bad and the ugly. …Well, wake up! Hell is a nightmare created in your own psyche. Hell exists in your own mind. It is only there that you will burn for eternity. Hell is a choice. It’s your choice. Now shout it out! Say it! “Get the ‘HELL’ out of here!” Say it again! You see, if you say it loud enough and you actually mean it – IT will go away. Watch it dissipate before your eyes, while you walk back into your life as the warrior that you are. Then go find that PERSON, PLACE or THING that makes you the happiest. Your STATE OF MIND will be waiting patiently there for you.

Vicious, evil, hateful, cold
A malignant, sinful, virulent mold
Hell is the fire in your soul
that burns from within
It’s raw; it’s bold
Hell is the PERSON who lurks about
Who shatters your heart and casts all doubt
Hell is the PLACE which tears you apart;
Limb from limb; an injured start
It’s the THING that torments you
night and day
as you lose your way
Hell is a demon and your worst nightmare
It controls your mind as you lay unaware
Hell performs the devil’s work,
and acts with no remorse
It takes you down a frightful path –
An eerie Shaitan’s course
Hell’s venom runs throughout your veins
It marks your soul with lethal stains
There’s nowhere to run; There’s nowhere to hide
Hell is cunning, vulgar; and filled with pride
You are powerless over this entity
When all you need do is to set “Hell” free
Wake up! Be quick! Open your eyes!
Turn away from Hell’s stare
and its nefarious lies
Hell is a choice you don’t have to make
Be the warrior that you are
Choose well – you’re awake!

Hell! Is it a Person, Place or Thing? We must all make that determination in life, and we must also understand that Hell is a Perception or a State of Mind that we can control. We can either choose to remain in hell, or simply wake up and walk away.
