Remember that the sun brings shadows
that in warmest bright light-filled spaces
darkest darknesses linger
felt though not seen —-
demons crowd those corners
the sun is still there —-
false comfort
demons don’t dwell on the warm
they swarm the chill gloom just beyond
glimpse them in the dim —-
then turn your back if you can
Melissa Ridley Elmes holds an MFA in Writing from Lindenwood University, where she also teaches in the undergraduate English Studies program. Her poetry and prose have appeared in The Blotter, Ink Quarterly, The World of Myth, and other print and web venues, and her first book of poetry, Arthurian Things: A Collection of Poems, won the World of Myth open contract challenge and was published by Dark Myth Productions earlier this year.
