A Kingbird Pecks
written by: Sergio A. Ortiz
@Saore
beyond these shores
the noonday sun as harsh
as wind on Barrow Island–
a kingbird pecks
the head of an eagle
we stopped
catching cucubanos
on Constitutional Assembly day
and lifted our clenched fists
dripping with sadness
we entered
that summer heatwave
fluent in distrust–
whoever panics at the site of blood
panics at the cry for freedom
